12 Shouts To The Ten Forgotten Heavens

12 Shouts to the Ten Forgotten Heavens is a performance immersion project presenting twelve one-day performances over a period of three years at the Whitney Museum of American Art, in the Meatpacking District of NYC. 12 Shouts began on the Vernal Equinox, March 2016, as a celebration of the place-based sensitivity of the museum architecture and its awareness, interaction, and openness to the cycles and rhythms of the day, seasons, geographical location, and of human presence and interaction. The context and content of the museum is strategic frame and entry point, and as with the ritual (where transitory and ephemeral human expression and wisdom is gathered), each performance reiterates and reaffirms.

The 12 Shouts collaborate with a temporal and mythic order of deeper significance. The twelve performances propose the creation of new ceremonial calendar, ritual cycle, and contemporary mythology – moving over three years from a stochastic state of complexity and fragmentation to the deep structural essences of cosmological unity.

Human collaborators include Dallas-based scholar and performance maker Thomas Riccio, visual artist Suzanne Bocanegra, sound and media artists Tei Blow and Sahra Motalebi, puppet artist Amanda Villalobos, and others.

The first “Shout” took place exactly on the Vernal Equinox of the year 2016, at 12:30am on March 20th for an invited audience of 100, performed by Dee Beasnael, Hye Young Chyun, Eleanor Hutchins, Robert M. Johanson, Sarah Matusek, Sarah Willis, and was written and directed by Sibyl Kempson, who also performed. The Museum opened especially for the performance which unfolded in the lobby, on the stairwell and in the elevator leading to the 3rd floor, and in the theater space on the 3rd floor.

Succeeding Shouts are either ticketed by the Whitney Museum or are free and open to the pubic, occurring on the following timeline:
